Mercy est arrivée au Canada en 2009, pleine de vie et d'excitation à la suite de la nomination de son mari au poste de haut-commissaire (ambassadeur) de la République du Cameroun. Alors qu'elle s'installait dans son nouvel environnement, elle ne pouvait pas se douter que sept mois plus tard, sa vie prendrait un tournant dramatique.
Elle s'est réveillée un matin en se plaignant de fatigue, de fièvre, de maux de tête et de vision floue, et a été transportée d'urgence à l'hôpital pour ce qu'elle pensait être une affection de routine. Mais un mauvais diagnostic médical bouleverserait sa vie. Lorsqu'elle a été placée dans un fauteuil roulant à son arrivée aux urgences, elle était loin de se douter qu'elle venait de faire les derniers pas sur ses deux pieds. Elle est rapidement tombée dans le coma, oscillant entre la vie et la mort pendant des semaines, avant de finalement se rétablir miraculeusement après avoir subi une chirurgie à cur ouvert à haut risque. Mais ce rétablissement devait simplement la préparer à l'horreur d'une autre réalité sinistre et morne: l'amputation de ses deux bras et deux jambes. En dépit de craintes et de contretemps, et avec deux bras prothétiques, deux jambes prothétiques et deux valvules cardiaques prothétiques, Mercy s'épanouit et retrouve rapidement son rythme de croisière.
Elle nous surprend avec sa grâce, son caractère et son ingéniosité en tant qu'entrepreneure, confidente de diplomate, femme de foi. Malgré son calvaire, Mercy évite l'amertume et le ressentiment, et épouse plutôt la vie, l'amour, la compassion et le pardon tout en cherchant à faire la lumière sur ceux qui sont dans les tranchées et les affres du désespoir.
