This is Volume 5 of the collected works of Montesquieu, a pivotal figure of the Enlightenment. Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu (1689-1755), was a French judge, man of letters, and political philosopher.
He is famous for his articulation of the theory of separation of powers, taken for granted in modern discussions of government and implemented in many constitutions throughout the world. His Lettres persanes (Persian Letters) satirized French society, and his De l'esprit des lois (The Spirit of the Laws) remains a foundational text in political science.
