Ces leçons ne s'adressant pas qu'à des étudiants, et devant être fort peu nombreuses, j'ai supposé que tous les problèmes trop spéciaux devaient en être exclus et qu'un sujet d'intérêt général s'imposait. Heureusement, notre époque semble revenir à la philosophie sous la cendre, le feu vit toujours. Oxford, longtemps la pépinière, pour le monde anglais, de l'idéalisme inspiré de Kant et de Hegel, est récemment devenu le berceau d'une manière de penser toute différente. Ceux-là mêmes qui ne sont pas des philosophes ont commencé à s'intéresser à une controverse sur ce qu'on est convenu d'appeler le pluralisme ou l'humanisme. Ne dirait-on pas que le vieil empirisme anglais, depuis si longtemps démodé, et remplacé dans ce pays par les formules allemandes, plus sonores et de plus noble allure, fût en train de retrouver ses ailes et de reprendre des forces pour un vol plus vigoureux que jamais ? Ne dirait-on pas qu'on est en train d'en sonder et d'en examiner à nouveau les fondations ?...
