Mateo, 18 ans, quitte Paris et sa mère pour rejoindre son oncle et son grand-père paternel, photographes professionnels à Port-Vendres, dans les Pyrénées orientales. Renouant avec ses racines catalanes et en compagnie de Manuella, son amie d'enfance, il redécouvre le site de l'ancienne dynamiterie de Paulilles fermé en 1984 et réhabilité en parc environnemental dédié à la mémoire ouvrière. Mateo tombe en extase devant la fresque murale à l'entrée du site, reproduction en aplats monochromes d'une photographie ancienne représentant des ouvrières quittant l'usine. Quand il décide d'immortaliser son coup de coeur avec son appareil photo, un flash le propulse en 1924, dans la tête du photographe auteur du cliché original.
