Pi (π), le rapport entre la circonférence d'un cercle et son diamètre, est connu depuis des milliers d'années. Même avant notre ère, les anciens mathématiciens avaient trouvé des approximations de pi précises à deux chiffres (3,1). Les Babyloniens utilisaient 25/8 comme approximation de pi. Les anciens Égyptiens utilisaient 16/9 au carré pour pi. Les prochains à améliorer les approximations de pi furent les mathématiciens chinois.
