Extraits: L'histoire nationale est, pour tous les hommes du même pays, une sorte de propriété commune; c'est une portion du patrimoine moral que chaque génération qui disparaît, lègue à celle qui la remplace; aucune ne doit la transmettre telle qu'elle l'a reçue, mais toutes ont pour devoir d'y ajouter quelque chose en certitude et en clarté. Ces progrès ne sont pas seulement une oeuvre littéraire noble et glorieuse, ils donnent sous de certains rapports la mesure de la vie sociale chez un peuple civilisé; car les sociétés humaines ne vivent pas uniquement dans le présent, et il leur importe de savoir d'où elles viennent pour qu'elles puissent voir où elles vont. Le premier coup d'oeil de celui qui étudie sérieusement et sincèrement notre histoire doit plonger au fond de ce chaos de traditions et d'opinions discordantes, et chercher par quelles transformations successives, par quelles fluctuations du faux au vrai, de l'hypothèse à la réalité, la notion des origines de la société française a passé, pour arriver jusqu'à nous......La manière de vivre des rois francs, l'intérieur de la maison royale, la vie orageuse des seigneurs et des évêques; l'usurpation, les guerres civiles et les guerres privées; la turbulence intrigante des Gallo-Romains et l'indiscipline brutale des Barbares; l'absence de tout ordre administratif et de tout lien moral entre les habitants des provinces gauloises, au sein d'un même royaume; le réveil des antiques rivalités et des haines héréditaires de canton à canton et de ville à ville; partout une sorte de retour à l'état de nature, et l'insurrection des volontés individuelles contre la règle et la loi, sous quelque forme qu'elles se présentent, politique, civile ou religieuse; l'esprit de révolte et de violence régnant jusque dans les monastères de femmes tels sont les tableaux divers que j'ai essayé de tracer d'après les monuments contemporains, et dont la réunion doit offrir une vue du VIe siècle en Gaule.
