Que le lecteur veuille bien ne considérer les premières pages de ce livre que comme un fragment des mémoires que je publierai peut-être un jour, non que ma vie vaille la peine d'être racontée, mais parce qu'elle a côtoyé souvent celle d'artistes très illustres. - Car il ne s'agit ici que de quelques souvenirs, écrits comme pour moi-même, souvenirs recueillis en plusieurs années de relations suivies avec Richard Wagner.
Les livres publiés sur le Maître, dans toutes les langues, dans tous les styles, pour le combattre ou le glorifier, empliraient une bibliothèque; le catalogue seul de ces critiques, études, biographies, formerait un volume; tout a donc été dit sur ses défaites et ses victoires, et sur ce que l'on veut appeler son système musical; il est donc inutile de le redire une fois de plus. J'ai renoncé d'ailleurs, depuis peu, à toute idée de prosélytisme; après avoir longtemps combattu, j'abandonne la lutte, au moment où pour beaucoup la victoire semble probable. J'ai pour cela des raisons que je ne veux qu'indiquer et qui me semblent décisives...
