Il estimé que le Yi King a été créé il y a 6500 ans. En l'an 500 avant J.-C., Confucius et ses disciples établirent dix commentaires sur le Zhou Yi, l'un des plus anciens textes classiques chinois. Ces commentaires soulignent l'importance du confucianisme, et expliquent comment interpréter cinquante petits traits pour effectuer une lecture divinatoire. En l'an 200 après J.-C., le Zhou Yi et les commentaires furent combinés pour former ce que l'on nomme aujourd'hui le Yi King.
