Set in the years before Pinochet's dictatorship, this book established Antonio Skármeta's reputation as one of the most emblematic Latin American authors and served as the inspiration for the Oscar-winning film Il Postino. Mario Jiménez, a young fisherman, decides to leave his job to become the postman of a tiny island where the only person who receives correspondence is the poet Pablo Neruda. Jiménez admires Neruda and patiently hopes that one day the poet might dedicate a book to him, or at least have more than a short exchange of words and a small tip. His longing is finally rewarded and the two strike up a peculiar relationship. However, the strained atmosphere in Chile during those years brings about a dramatic dénouement.
