Le général le remarqua entre les autres jeunes gens pour son courage mâle, et pour sa facilité à accepter la nouvelle discipline que Scipion introduisit dans une armée corrompue par la mollesse et le luxe. On dit aussi que le général l'avait vu attaquer en sa présence un ennemi corps à corps et le renverser à terre. Il tâchait donc de se l'attacher par des récompenses honorifiques. En outre, un jour après souper, comme on parlait de généraux, un des convives, soit qu'il doutât réellement, soit pour faire plaisir à Scipion, lui demanda quel général et quel chef le peuple romain aurait après lui pour le remplacer. Scipion frappant doucement sur l'épaule de Marius, qui était assis au-dessous de lui: Peut-être bien celui-ci, répondit-il; tant ils étaient heureusement nés tous deux, l'un pour annoncer sa grandeur future dès sa jeunesse, l'autre pour comprendre par le début quelle serait la fin !...
