From Shah to Revolution: The Middle East in History, is my attempt to tell the modern Middle East as it actually unfolded - not as tidy abstractions, but through the messy, human forces of people, pressure, and hard choices. I start in Iraq, not Iran: with oil and power, and with the slow, relentless rise of Saddam Hussein. Moving from the chapter Iraq First to Saddam Hussein Takes Power, I trace how a poor, fragmented country was remade by the politics of oil, waves of conflict, and ruthless backstage maneuvering. Saddam does not appear out of nowhere as a cartoonish villain; he is built, step by step, inside a system that rewarded loyalty, cultivated fear, and prized control.
Then the story turns to Iran, where history reaches back far deeper than any one ruler. I go back to the roots of Shi'a memory - from the Prophet Muhammad to the martyrdom at Karbala - and then into the quieter moments that altered the balance between state, society, and religion. The Tobacco Protest of the early 1890s and the D'Arcy oil concession of 1901 are more than isolated incidents: they show how ordinary people, merchants, and clerics learned to push back against foreign influence and royal prerogative long before the word revolution ever echoed down the street.
From there the story sweeps through the rise and fall of Reza Shah - a soldier-king who tried to wrench Iran into modernity - and then to his son, the young Shah, who ruled always in the long shadow of authority he never fully mastered. Operation Ajax and the overthrow of Mossadegh mark a decisive break: in 1953, a coup backed by the CIA and MI6 violently redirected Iran's political future. Persepolis appears then as a stage of dazzling pageantry - most explicitly in the Shah's grand 1971 celebrations - a glittering setting planted just before the foundations began to crack.
Religion moves from the background to the center as the narrative shifts from the great seminaries of Najaf to the shrines and schools of Qom, through the upheavals of the White Revolution and into Khomeini's years in exile. These chapters trace how land reform, oil wealth, expanding education, and dense clerical networks collided and recomposed power. Khomeini does not arrive as a myth already formed; he accrues authority in exile - through taped sermons, devoted students, and impeccable political timing - even as the Shah steadily loses his footing.
The final stretch pulls the reader straight into the collapse itself - the fall of the Shah, the stand-off between Bakhtiar and Khomeini, the seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, and the dangerous spiral that followed. The failed rescue attempt known as Operation Eagle Claw - the Desert One debacle - shows how what began as a domestic revolution rapidly dragged global powers into its orbit.
