This book answers five big questions. Where did the land we live on come from? Where did the people of Britain come from? How did our country emerge and change? How has the way the country is run evolved? What is going to happen to us and our land in the future? But these questions are addressed on the longest possible timescale - from the creation of the Universe in the Big Bang, from the first life appearing on Earth, from the first extended families of hunter-gatherers right up to the present day and the global Corona virus pandemic. Our future is described from the impact of sea-level rises on the British Isles to the death of stars, galaxies, the Universe and all life as we know it. A reader should gain a new perspective on the petty troubles of our daily lives, however difficult they may be at times. We are living in a brief interval in the life of the Universe when life like us can exist - we should be grateful for the opportunity to enjoy it and learn to treasure it. Hopefully a broader understanding of Britain and the British throughout time will be gained.
