In attempting to explain the action of the loaded line to the attorney, Mr. Swan, I tried to employ the results of mathematical work embodied in diagrams accompanying my report of July 18.1899, and other diagrams showing the effect of distributed inductance. This consumed considerable time. I know that Mr. Swan insisted on a very extensive study of the state of the art, and that United States and foreign patents were thoroughly investigated. I know he considered it necessary to thoroughly understand the work of Silvanus P. Thompson, and a great deal of time was spent on his American and English patents and the paper read at Chicago before the International Electrical Congress in 1893. When it came to writing the specifications it seemed best to Mr. Swan that mathematical formulae should be entirely omitted from the specifications, and that they should be made in language which would be at once understood by telephone engineers. You may assume that it will be an assistance to the Court to have presented an explanation of the less familiar electrical properties involved in the invention at issue, in language devoid, as for as may be, from technicalities.
