1923 im Haus ihres Gro vaters in Hinterpommern auf die Welt gekommen, musste sich Christa von Hassell mit dem zunehmenden und allgegenwärtigen Einfluss des Nazi-Regimes auseinandersetzen. Als Kind eines deutschen Armeeoffiziers zog sie mit ihren Eltern oft um. Über Internat, Universität, Heirat, den Zweiten Weltkrieg, das Leben unter sowjetischer Besatzung und einen Neuanfang im Westen, schlie lich in Amerika, ist die Biografie eine unglaubliche, emotionale Reise über Kindheit, Überleben und Beziehungen.
Die Darstellung von Christas Leben konzentriert sich auch auf die Rolle der Erinnerung: geformt, verzerrt und neu ausgerichtet im ständigen Prozess des Erzählens von Geschichten aus der Vergangenheit in Verbindung mit dem Schweigen über viele Aspekte.
