Erben des Stahls ist ein bewegender historischer Roman, der den Aufstieg, die Zerrüttung und die Auslöschung einer jüdischen Industriellenfamilie in Deutschland erzählt - von den letzten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die Nachkriegszeit.
Im Zentrum steht die Familie Rosenfeld aus Suhl, deren Patriarch Isaak Rosenfeld im Jahr 1884 eine Waffenfabrik gründet. Mit Vision, Flei und unerschütterlichem Glauben an Fortschritt und Verantwortung baut er ein florierendes Unternehmen auf. Seine Kinder Samuel, Jakob und Rebekka wachsen zwischen Tradition und Moderne auf - zerrissen zwischen jüdischem Erbe und deutschem Nationalstolz.
Der Roman entfaltet sich als gro es Familienepos über fünf Jahrzehnte deutscher Geschichte:
Vom Glanz des Kaiserreichs über die Hölle des Ersten Weltkriegs, die Hungerjahre der Weimarer Republik, den Aufstieg des Nationalsozialismus bis hin zur Vernichtung im Holocaust. Während Samuel versucht, das Lebenswerk seines Vaters zu bewahren, geraten er und seine Familie zunehmend ins Visier des NS Regimes. Alte Freundschaften zerbrechen, Loyalität wird zur Lebensgefahr - und selbst der treue Buchhalter Heinrich Albrecht steht zwischen Pflicht und Menschlichkeit.
Mit eindringlicher Sprache und tiefem historischen Bewusstsein schildert Schubert, wie sich der Glaube an Vernunft und Fortschritt in einem Land verliert, das sich dem Hass verschreibt. Das Schicksal der Rosenfelds wird zum Spiegel einer ganzen Epoche - einer Zeit, in der moralische Werte, Menschlichkeit und Identität im Feuer der Geschichte geschmiedet und zerstört werden.
Im letzten Teil führt der Roman in die Nachkriegsjahre: Überlebende kehren heim, Fabriken sind Trümmer, Schuld und Erinnerung ringen um Deutung.
