Inhalt: Das Geheimnis der Gerrard Street, 'Gagtooths' Abbild, Das Spukhaus in der Duchess Street, Savareens Verschwinden Das Buch konnte erst kurz nach dem frühen Tod des Autors veröffentlicht werden, der es somit nicht mehr erlebt hat. Die Herausgeber sagen: John Charles Dent, der Autor der folgenden bemerkenswerten Geschichten, wurde 1841 in Kendal, Westmorland, England, geboren. Seine Eltern wanderten kurz nach diesem Ereignis nach Kanada aus und brachten natürlich den Jungen mit, der später ein bekannter kanadischer Schriftsteller und Historiker werden sollte. Die vier Geschichten, aus denen der vorliegende Band besteht, wurden von ihrem Autor in grö eren Abständen für verschiedene Zeitschriften verfasst. Einige Zeit vor seinem Tod zog er in Erwägung, sie in Buchform zu veröffentlichen, und hat sie zu diesem Zweck ausgewählt und sorgfältig überarbeitet. Er war der Meinung, dass sie es wert waren, vor der Vergessenheit gerettet zu werden, und wenn wir sie mit vielen ähnlichen Werken vergleichen, die ständig in der Presse erscheinen, können wir nicht glauben, dass sein Urteil falsch war. Sie werden nun in Übereinstimmung mit seinem Wunsch veröffentlicht.
