Über Jahrzehnte hinweg wurde der Satz mit einer Mischung aus Ironie und Resignation wiederholt: Die Kernfusion sei stets drei ig Jahre entfernt. Vorsichtige Wissenschaftler sagten es, skeptische Politiker und Kritiker, die der gro en Versprechen müde geworden waren. Es war beinahe ein geflügeltes Wort der Energiewelt, eine elegante Form einzugestehen, dass der Traum schön, aber unerreichbar sei. Bis zu jenem Tag, an dem dieser Satz seinen Sinn verlor.
Es war kein gewöhnlicher Tag. Es gab keine Menschenmengen auf den Stra en, keine pathetischen Reden in globalen Liveübertragungen. Und doch bestätigte eine Gruppe von Forschern in der kontrollierten Stille eines Labors, umgeben von Sensoren, Kabeln und Bildschirmen mit für Laien unverständlichen Zahlen, etwas, das bis dahin eher in den Bereich der Theorie als in den der Wirklichkeit gehört hatte: Zum ersten Mal erzeugte eine Fusionsreaktion mehr Energie, als zu ihrer Zündung aufgewendet werden musste. Der sogenannte energetische Break-even war keine zukünftige Verhei ung mehr. Er war Realität geworden.
In streng technischem Sinne mochte diese Nachricht bescheiden erscheinen. Kein Kraftwerk war in Betrieb genommen worden, keine Stadt versorgt, nicht einmal ein Stadtviertel. Historisch jedoch war ihre Bedeutung tiefgreifend. Der Menschheit war es gelungen, wenn auch nur für den Bruchteil einer Sekunde, den Prozess zu reproduzieren, der die Sterne antreibt. Wir hatten das Herz der Sonne berührt, ohne zu verbrennen.
Dieser Moment markierte mehr als einen wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt. Er deutete auf einen möglichen Epochenwechsel hin, auf einen Wendepunkt, der uns zwingt, unser Verhältnis zur Energie, zum Planeten und letztlich zu uns selbst neu zu denken.
Die Geschichte der menschlichen Zivilisation lässt sich als Geschichte ihrer Energiequellen lesen. Die Beherrschung des Feuers sicherte das Überleben. Die Kohle trieb die Industrielle Revolution an. Das Erdöl beschleunigte das 20. Jahrhundert, säte jedoch zugleich die Samen von Konflikten, Ungleichheiten und einer Klimakrise, die heute die grundlegenden Gleichgewichte des Planeten bedroht. Jeder energetische Sprung brachte Fortschritt - und neue Abhängigkeiten und Gefahren. Die Kernfusion hingegen verspricht etwas radikal anderes: Überfluss ohne Verwüstung, Macht ohne Rauch, ohne Asche, ohne die Last von Abfällen, die über Jahrtausende bestehen bleiben.
Darum greift es zu kurz, die Fusion auf eine blo e Technologie zu reduzieren. Es geht nicht nur um Reaktoren, Plasma oder Magnetfelder. Es geht um eine mögliche zivilisatorische Transformation, vergleichbar mit der Erfindung der Landwirtschaft oder der Elektrifizierung der modernen Welt. Eine nahezu unerschöpfliche Energiequelle, beruhend auf häufig vorkommenden Elementen, fähig zu arbeiten ohne Treibhausgasemissionen und mit ungleich geringeren Risiken als die der traditionellen Kernspaltung.
Dieses Versprechen ist so leuchtend, dass es beinahe beunruhigt: saubere, konstante und nahezu unerschöpfliche Energie; die gro skalige Entsalzung von Meerwasser für aride Regionen; die industrielle Produktion von grünem Wasserstoff; Städte, deren Versorgung weder vom Klima noch vom Untergrund abhängt. Eine Welt, in der Energie kein Faktor der Knappheit und des Konflikts mehr ist. Theoretisch eröffnet die Fusion die Möglichkeit, menschliche Entwicklung vom ökologischen Schaden zu entkoppeln.
Doch jede Verhei ung dieser Grö enordnung wird von einer unausweichlichen Frage begleitet: Ist sie nicht zu schön, um wahr zu sein?
