Im Nachlasse des der Wissenschaft und den Seinen nur allzu fruh entrissenen Verfassers fand sich neben Bruchstucken der Fortsetzung seiner grofsen Arbeit uber die Geschichte des dreissigjahrigen Krieges das vorliegende Werk im wesentlichen vollendet und abgeschlossen vor. Blofs die Anordnung der einzelnen Kapitel war zweifelhaft und musste von dem Herausgeber durch abwagende Vergleichung des Inhaltes derselben erschlossen werden; hie und da waren auch geringe sachliche oder stilistische Anderungen notwendig, die der Verfasser ohne Zweifel selbst vorgenommen haben wurde, wenn er den Druck des Werkes erlebt hatte. Grossere und einschneidende Anderungen vorzunehmen, hielt sich der Herausgeber nicht fur berechtigt, auch wenn seine Berufsgeschafte ihm eine selbststandige Durcharbeitung des ganzen Stoffes gestattet hatten, was keineswegs der Fall war; der Verstorbene darf nach der Stellung, die er sich in der Wissenschaft durch die hingebungsvolle Arbeit eines ganzen Menschenlebens errungen hat, beanspruchen, dafs seine Ansicht, unentstellt durch Zuthaten anderer, zum Ausdrucke gelange, auch wo sie diesem oder jenem Beurteiler irrig erscheint. Dies entsprach auch am besten der Pietat, welche der Herausgeber fur das nachgelassene Werk eines Mannes naturgemafs empfindet, dem er als Schuler und jungerer Freund fur mannigfache Forderuug zu innigem Danke verpflichtet ist.
