lndem ich dieses Buchlein der Oeffentlichkeit ubergebe. bin ich mir der mannigfachen Bedenklichkeiten eines solchen Unternehmens bewusst. Die meisten Schwierigkeiten brachte die Nothwendigkeit mit sich, den Anspruchen eines dreifachen Publicums zu genugen: einrnal wissenschaftlich durchgebildete, aber mit den sokratischen ldeen ganzlich unbekannte, dann wieder mit denselben innig vertraute, aber eben einfach glaubige, der Speculati0n abgeneigte, endlich weder glaubige noch gelehrte Leser und Leserinnen im Auge zu haben; denn wenn ich diese drei nicht zu einander hinfuhrte, so xvare die aufgewandte Muhe vollig zwecklos und unfruchtbar geblieben. Jenem dreifachen Erfordernisse entsprechend. musste bald ein wissenschaftlicher, bald ein religioser, immer aber ein popularer Ton angestrebt werden. Allein es war nicht moglich, diese Darstellungsarten alle zugleich festzuhalten. lch sah mich deshalb genothigt. die Tonart zu wechseln, und glaubte insbesondere im Anfang von allgemein anerkannten Grundlagen ausgehen, gegen Schluss aber die specifisch sokratischen BegrilTe einfuhren zu sollen. Deshalb ist auch einerseits der erste Theil, welcher ursprunglich als selbststandiges Ganzes gedacht war, in seiner ganzen Voraussetzungslosigkeit abgedruckt, andererseits im dritten mit Hinweisen auf innersokratische Standpunkte und Streitfragen nicht gekargt worden.
