In deutscher Übersetzung durch Julius Heinrich von Kirchmann erschien zunächst nur der 3. Teil unter dem Titel Abhandlung über den Bürger, Leipzig 1873. Der Text folgt der ersten einheitlichen Übertragung des dreiteiligen Werkes durch Max Frischeisen-Köhler von 1915/18. Der Übersetzer gab Hobbes' eingehende mathematischen und physikalischen Ausführungen nicht in vollem Wortlaut wieder, sondern stellte in Anlehnung an die originalen Marginaltexte eine Inhaltsübersicht zusammen und fügte dort die wichtigsten Definitionen und Sätze ein. Diese Kapitel sind durch ein Sternchen gekennzeichnet.
