Der Katechismus enthält die unverkürzte Glaubenslehre der Katholischen Kirche und ihre Antworten auf die religiösen, ethischen und sozialen Fragen unserer Zeit. Als Handbuch und Nachschlagewerk gibt er Orientierung im Alltag eines jeden Katholiken und jeder Katholikin in allen Fragen des Glaubens. Er ist in vier Teile gegliedert, die sich mit dem Glaubensbekenntnis, den Sakramenten, den Zehn Geboten und christlichen Gebeten beschäftigen.
Die lateinische Originalausgabe erschien 1997 als Latina Catechismi Catholicae Ecclesiae typica editio. Die offizielle deutsche Gemeinschaftsausgabe der Verlage De Gruyter Oldenbourg, St. Benno Verlag und Veritas beruht auf der lateinischen Fassung und ist der im deutschen Sprachraum ma gebende Text. Durch ein Register der zitierten Bibelstellen und ein ausführliches Sachregister ist er besonders benutzerfreundlich gestaltet. In dieser aktualisierten dritten Auflage enthält der Katechismus nunmehr auch den neuen Text zur Todesstrafe, der von Papst Franziskus mit einem Brief an die Bischöfe vom 1. August 2018 verkündet und nun in den Katechismus aufgenommen wurde.
