God Loves Divorce: Solemnize It debunks traditional assumptions of most Christian marriages that God is anti-Divorce; evaluates and critiques modern Christian theories of marriage using comparative analysis; promotes the social contract theory of marriage as a contractual relationship between two consenting adults, and therefore subject to the rules of legal contracts; argues against the Deific Decree concept which claims that God controls the dating, relationship, and marital choices of the faithful through some arbitrary spirit-directed process; contends for the falsity of the deific compulsion theory; advances the hypothesis that neither God nor his agency are involved in the emotional choices of dating or marital partners.
Overall, through this book, I propose the elevation of the divorce experience to the status of a normative Christian sacrament that celebrates the termination of a contractual relationship. Like other beginnings and ends celebrated in Christianity such as marriages, child births, and funerals, a solemn divorce ends, not in the death of both or either parties, but with both spouses alive to live happily ever after without each other. Solemn divorce is the end of a mutual choice and promise of two persons, and the fresh beginning of a new independent life in a hopeful quest for new possibilities.
Hence my purposes for writing God Loves Divorce: Solemnize It are to: 1. Defeat traditional notions of marriage as a DEATH PACT; 2. Erase the stigma and taboo associated with pre-marital and post-marital divorce preparations and proceedings; 3. Encourage those in ongoing abusive relations to make the bold move to pursue divorce proceedings; 4. Provide an alternative narrative intended to negate the violence associated with the view of until death do us part - unfortunately, those who feel trapped in a death pact marriage may resort to cowering in dreadful fear, killing their partner, or committing suicide in order to get out of the relationship; 5. Make divorce a shameless and celebration-worthy exercise of God-given rights to life, liberty, and property, and; 6. Inspire cordial pre-planned, celebrated divorces aimed at erasing the stigmatization of divorcees as sinful, outside the will of God, or subject to the wrath of God in hell.
I confront notions of marriage as a death pact in Chapter One; reframe marriage as a voluntary mutual contract between parties in Chapter Two; debunk traditional hypothesis of divorce as sin in Chapter Three; and in Chapter Four, I portray divorce as a positive biblical imperative call for constant invocations of individual rights to life, liberty, and property in the marriage context. I navigate the contemporary legal landscape of divorce in American jurisdictions in Chapter Five.
In Chapter Six, I present an overview of characterizations of marital property as either community or separate properties for purposes of equitable distributions during divorce proceedings. Chapter Seven explores articulates action steps in assets divisions and necessary responsibilities during a divorce process. The emotional and spiritual impacts of divorce are discussed in Chapter Eight, while Chapter Nine discusses post-divorce dating relationship concerns.
In Chapter Ten I highlight post-divorce resurgence of life and personal growth, while Chapter Eleven evaluates post-divorce coparenting in the best interest of the children and related matters. I make the case for the solemnization of divorce as a valid Christian sacrament in Chapter Twelve, and I conclude the book with Chapter Thirteen reinforcing my contention that biblical and legal evidence demonstrates that God loves divorce and therefore the divorce process should be accorded sacramental status leading to solemnizations of divorces across Christendom.
