Their most distinguishing feature is their sturdy, shovel-like forelimbs adapted for digging. They possess a high-domed, brownish-gray carapace (upper shell) and a flatter, lighter-colored plastron (lower shell). These physical traits make them well-suited for life spent largely underground.Natural History and LifespanGopher tortoises have existed for millions of years, evolving in dry, sandy habitats such as pine flatwoods, scrublands, and coastal dunes. These environments offer the loose, well-drained soil necessary for digging their extensive burrows.
