Halloween of Illusions and Echoes is Joshua Donn's horror short-story collection that brings together thirteen chilling tales of the dark, mysterious, and all-too-often evil history of Halloween. With supernatural encounters, mythological beginnings, and psychological horror, the stories tread the thin blade line between life and nightmare and foretell that beneath the costume disguise lies a world of shadows and the whispered echoes of history. It is succeeded by Shadows of the Past as Joe Maxim's lonely night becomes ghost experience when his ghostly form appears with an odd girl who says she is his daughter, both memory and illusion. Desperation and fear rising in Joe, the distinction between living and ghostly is precariously thin, and a ghoulish truth is revealed. In The Darkness Beyond Halloween, a grouchy elderly man called Elijah Sabbath fights against a malevolent goblin monstrosity symbolizing the dark emptiness of the holiday, releasing an evening of horror that creeps throughout his home and his soul. The story suggests greed, abandonment, and the ruin that comes from not placating the Halloween spirits. The Shadow of the Cutty Black Sow transports us to 1959 when young David must undergo the ancient Celtic rituals to save his family from hell-black Black Sow. Boy's bravery and legend are intertwined in the tale, and the result reveals the outstretched hand of tradition and terror on which legend stands From spooky houses and phantom ships to ancient monstrosities and haunted relics, Donn's stories stir primal terror fueled by cultural legend.
Lost legacies and cursed histories haunt us in the book's pages, unseen monsters that haunt on Halloween night in Technicolor. As the stories go on, characters are forced to fight their most primitive phobias, from fighting off supernatural hallucinations, demons, or their own demented minds, in order to uncover the true nature of the holiday as a byproduct of our own suppressed phobias and the devil within all of us. Thirteen Tales of Halloween forces us to look at Halloween for what it truly is past fantasy candy and costume; it is a night when illusions are shattered, the past returns to haunt in whispers, and ghosts of the past emerge to steal the present from us. Joshua Donn's lovely prose leaves the reader wondering what is real and what is nothing more than a whisper in the blackness long after finishing the book.
