DEMOCRACY IS DEAD! In the not-too-distant future, once thriving democracies surrendered to fascism after a global financial meltdown destabilized the world. Rampant joblessness, homelessness, and violent crimes led to civil unrest. There were riots and protests and major cities burned on a nightly basis. Society became polarized, divided, and the people too easily turned to extremists to solve their political, economic, and social problems. Such was the case in Japan. Bloody chaos brought to power the New Horizon Party, a crypto-fascist political party led by General Kenji Matsuda, a megalomaniac despot and cult of personality. He rules Japan with an iron fist, demanding unquestionable loyalty and conformity to traditional Japanese values. For that purpose, the government passed the Cultural Decrees, outlawing freedom of expression, and banning all foreign music, movies and fashion, calling them symbols of Western decadence.
Defying this order are the Harajuku Tribe, a counterculture movement led by an eclectic group of kids renowned for their unique street fashion, wild hair, and love of rock music. They are a direct contradiction to the conformity the State is fiercely trying to promote. Day by day their numbers grow, as does their open defiance to General Kenji Matsuda and his gangster regime. The State responds with a nationwide crackdown. Their tactics are cruel and pitiless. This government-sponsored attack on children is too much for some to bear. It galvanizes them into action. Those who have access to guns and explosives use them. They blow up government buildings and assassinate government employees. The State, all-powerful as it is, seems at times powerless. A genuine resistance movement forms, born from the tireless spirit of the Harajuku Tribe. Harajuku culture is no longer just about clothes and music. It is about freedom. It is about defying the State.
To combat the Harajuku Tribe, the government enlists the help of their top-secret child soldiers. Their job is to infiltrate the Harajuku Tribe and destroy it from within. One such child soldier is Kurotengoku, a cute, unassuming 13-year-old girl, and our humble narrator. She is head of her class in espionage and military tactics-a natural born killer! Posing as a transfer student, she successfully embeds herself in the school's underground Harajuku scene. She takes great pride in her deception, wanting nothing more than to eradicate all subversives and preserve the integrity of the State, that is, until she meets Jin, the quiet but handsome classroom monitor who also happens to be a Harajuku. The more time they spend together, the harder she falls for him, and the less certain she is about her mission. Now she's confronted with a difficult decision. Remain loyal to the State and crush the Harajuku Tribe, or risk her life to save the boy she loves?
