ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR
Heart of Darkness was written by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) and first published in 1899 in a three-part serial and in book format in 1902. It is considered to be his most famous work.
Charles Marlow, the novel's narrator, relates a tale of his journey up the Congo River in the Congo on behalf of a Belgian trading company including his encounters with Mr. Kurtz, a European trader, whom the natives have worshipped. The book raises issues about imperialism and racism.
