Helen of the Old House is a novel by Harold Bell Wright, first published in 1921. The story is set in a small town in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, where a young woman named Helen leaves her wealthy family to live in an old, dilapidated house on the outskirts of town. Helen is determined to make a life for herself on her own terms, and she quickly becomes a beloved member of the community. However, her family is not content to let her go so easily, and they try to force her to return home. Meanwhile, Helen finds herself caught in a love triangle between two men: the handsome and wealthy Jack, and the kind and humble John. As she navigates her feelings for both men and tries to hold onto her independence, Helen must also confront the secrets and scandals of her past. With its themes of love, family, and self-discovery, Helen of the Old House is a timeless classic of American literature.1921. Wright, served as a minister prior to beginning his artistic and writing career. The story begins: No well informed resident of Millsburgh, when referring to the principal industry of his little manufacturing city, every says the mills, it is always the Mill. The reason for this common habit of mind is that one mill so overshadows all others, and so dominates the industrial and civic life of this community, that in the peoples thought it stands for all. The philosopher who keeps the cigar stand on the corner of Congress Street and Ward Avenue explained it very clearly when he answered an inquiring stranger, You just cant think Millsburgh without thinkin mills; an you cant think mills without thinkin the Mill.
