After an uncomfortable and harrowing journey to the crumbling relic of a hacienda owned by Hector Alvarez, Emilio settles in to rest before his meeting with El Patròn. Emilio hopes during his stay he can get over Sylvie and his sense of loss when he discovered she might be carrying his baby. He promises himself never to get involved with a married woman again.
Soon after he arrives he meets the Patròn's young, pretty and unhappy wife, Alma. They both love poetry.
At dinner Emilio gets to know them both. Hector is a braggart and philanderer. Alma married Hector under duress. At first Alma was willing to make the most of her marriage, but after Hector's ...rutting... and the power she gained from bonding with her spirit animal, the jaguar, she now stands her own ground.
Hector looks at everything as a possession or a commodity. He refers to Alma as his most prized possession and El Cid his Arabian stallion as his second most.
Overnight Hector loses El Cid to a jaguar attack. Emilio sees the Patròn's temper when Hector fires his pistol at the servant out of anger.
A telling thing happens when Alma and Emilio visit the stables to view El Cid. She absently puts her fingertips into one of the horse's wounds and brings her fingers to her tongue. She faints. Emilio carries her to the house. Alma realizes she is no longer in control of her spirit animal. Emilio begins to succumb to his attraction to Alma.
Hector has his own plan. He needs an heir to keep the plantation. He has failed and encourages Emilio to have sex with Alma. They fall in love.
Can Alma conquer her spirit animal and save her soul? Will Emilio be true to himself? Can Hector control his temper? Or will they be swallowed up by jealousy, the jungle, and madness?
