The History of the Marquis of Lussan and Isabella is a novel written by Charlotte Lennox and first published in 1764. The story follows the romantic and political adventures of the Marquis of Lussan, a French nobleman, and his lover Isabella, a Spanish woman. The novel is set in the early 18th century and takes place in France, Spain, and England. The Marquis of Lussan is a charming and ambitious man who seeks to advance his political career by marrying into a wealthy and influential family. He sets his sights on Isabella, a beautiful and intelligent woman who is the daughter of a powerful Spanish nobleman. Despite their different backgrounds, the Marquis and Isabella fall deeply in love and embark on a passionate affair. However, their love is threatened by the political tensions between France and Spain, as well as the scheming of the Marquis's jealous rival, the Duke of Medina. The Marquis and Isabella must navigate these challenges while trying to maintain their relationship and fulfill their personal ambitions. The novel is notable for its vivid descriptions of 18th-century European society and politics, as well as its exploration of themes such as love, ambition, and power. It is also significant as one of the earliest English novels to feature a non-English protagonist.Overall, The History of the Marquis of Lussan and Isabella is a compelling and engaging historical romance that offers insight into the social and political dynamics of its time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
