In April 1865, as the American Civil War staggered toward its end, two armies converged on a small North Carolina farm owned by people who never sought history; and could not escape it.
James and Nancy Bennett were ordinary farmers who had already paid dearly for the war. They had buried sons and a son-in-law, endured years of scarcity and fear, and learned to live with grief that never truly loosened its hold.
