The term 'humanitarian intervention' now refers to military intervention for humanitarian purposes in another country where human rights violations are taking place. The aim is to protect the population of that country from massive human rights violations. The focus is on supposed humanitarian purposes, which is why this approach has gained broad support in Western society. However, at the international level, interventions tend to be selective. For example, the UN Security Council did not intervene in Burundi, Colombia, Myanmar or even in the case of the most serious human rights violations in Syria. This phenomenon is examined and analysed in more detail in this political science bachelor's thesis.
