Hypatia (355-415) war eine griechische spätantike Mathematikerin, Astronomin und Philosophin. Von ihren Werken ist nichts erhalten geblieben, Einzelheiten ihrer Lehre sind nicht bekannt. Sie unterrichtete öffentlich und vertrat einen vermutlich mit kynischem Gedankengut angereicherten Neuplatonismus. Als Vertreterin einer nichtchristlichen philosophischen Tradition gehörte sie im überwiegend christlichen Alexandria der bedrängten paganen Minderheit an. Dennoch konnte sie lange unangefochten lehren und erfreute sich hohen Ansehens. Schlie lich wurde sie aber das Opfer eines politischen Machtkampfs, in dem religiöse Gegensätze instrumentalisiert wurden. Eine aufgehetzte christliche Menge brachte sie in eine Kirche, ermordete sie dort und zerstückelte ihren Leichnam. Fritz Mauthner (1849-1923) war ein deutschsprachiger Philosoph und Schriftsteller.
