In Desert and Wilderness is a novel by the Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz, first published in 1912. The story follows two young friends, fourteen-year-old Stas Tarkowski and eight-year-old Nel Rawlinson, who are kidnapped by Arab slave traders while on a safari in East Africa. The children are separated from their families and forced to survive in the harsh desert wilderness, facing numerous dangers such as wild animals, hostile tribes, and treacherous terrain. Along the way, they meet a number of memorable characters, including a wise old Arab named Smain and a brave young warrior named Mea. As they struggle to stay alive and find a way back to civilization, Stas and Nel learn valuable lessons about courage, resilience, and the importance of friendship.
