According to INSA/IBGE, the semi-arid region covers an area of 980,133 km and is home to approximately 22.6 million people, representing 42.6% of the population of the Northeast or 12% of the Brazilian population. It is thus one of the most populous semi-arid regions in the world and is characterized by high potential evapotranspiration, periods of drought, shallow soils, and reduced water retention capacity, which consequently limits its productive potential. Alternative technologies for coexisting with the semi-arid region are growing in considerable numbers and, as their effectiveness is proven, they strengthen rural communities. A new perception has emerged, with the concept of appropriate technologies, which aim to improve the quality of life of the rural population, highlighting their alternative nature. The characteristics that determine the viability and functionality of these technologies are: their ability to adapt to a wide variety of environments, be easily replicable, have low implementation and maintenance costs, and be easily appropriated by farmers.
