Arnaldo è un uomo goffo, ingenuo, nonché vittima designata di chiunque incroci il suo cammino; la sua vita è una serie di disavventure spesso grottesche ma che lo rendono simpatico. Il suo unico amico è Brutus, un mostriciattolo bizzarro e brutto quanto lui, trovato per caso nel sottotetto di casa.
Eppure, sotto la superficie del suo aspetto impacciato e della sua vita banale, si nasconde un uomo capace di sentimenti elevati. Quando si innamora di Roberta, una commessa che lo tratta con gentilezza, Arnaldo si rivela in grado di interpretare la complessità dei rapporti umani attraverso la propria semplicità , e le risposte sono sorprendenti.
Costretto a passare una settimana in una squallida pensione al mare, Arnaldo diventa un lettore assiduo, un amante scontento e trova un nuovo amico. E addirittura, usando le poche e semplici parole di cui dispone, Arnaldo riesce a impedire a un ragazzo di compiere il gesto estremo.
Forse stiamo parlando di un fesso, di un uomo destinato a essere stritolato dalle logiche del nostro tempo; o forse Arnaldo è un gentiluomo, un eroe che nel suo piccolo sta lavorando per salvare il mondo.
Arnaldo va al mare è una storia tenera e divertente, capace di far ridere e di commuovere. Per chi crede che anche le persone più ordinarie possano compiere gesti straordinari.
Arnaldo e Brutus abitano nella stessa casa, uno dentro l'altro fuori.Arnaldo è un Candido cresciuto in orfanotrofio, poco intelligente me gentile e disponibile, mentre Brutus è l'esemplare di una animale che si credeva estinto, il Muiun.
A proposito del Muiun, c'è chi l'ha visto (mio padre, per esempio) e c'è chi invece sostiene che si tratti di una leggenda dei nostri boschi, una bestia immaginaria a metà fra il rettile e l'anfibio e che, nonostante l'aspetto minaccioso, possa difendersi solo grazie alla puzza che emana: un salamone brutto e innocuo, dunque inesistente perché sarebbe uno sbaglio della natura e la natura, si sa, non sbaglia mai.
Brutus e Arnaldo, due errori; eppure uno resiste alla furia distruttrice della società attuale, che spia di nascosto, mentre l'altro è capace di imprese impossibili, non ultima quella di salvare il mondo.
