Tommaso Campanella, nato a Stilo nel 1568, fu un filosofo il cui spirito filosofico si manifestò fin dalla giovane età , nonostante gli sforzi del padre per farne giurista. La sua opera Philosophia Sensibus Demonstrata provocò un'accusa di eresia. Campanella lasciò il convento dove studiava e viaggiò per l'Italia, incontrando diversi personaggi illustri dell'epoca. Tornò a Stilo con l'obiettivo di riformare la società e indebolire l'autorità dominante, il che lo portò a cospirare contro il dispotismo spagnolo. Fu imprigionato per 27 anni e, dopo il suo rilascio, dovette affrontare ulteriori persecuzioni che lo costrinsero a fuggire in Francia, dove morì nel 1639.
La città del sole è l'opera più nota di Campanella, paragonabile all'Utopia di Tommaso Moro e alla Repubblica di Platone. Il libro descrive una città ideale situata su una collina e divisa in sette cerchi, ognuno dei quali rappresenta un pianeta. La città è governata da Hoh il Metafisico, aiutato da tre capi: Potenza, Saggezza e Amore.
L'organizzazione sociale è comunitaria, con tutti i beni e le responsabilità condivisi equamente. L'istruzione e la scienza sono molto apprezzate, vengono insegnate attraverso dipinti e spiegazioni pubbliche. Il sistema di governo è un miscuglio di elementi repubblicani e monarchici, ma con una forte inclinazione filosofica e morale. La città è fortificata in modo tale da rendere quasi impossibile la sua conquista, e il suo tempio centrale è un simbolo di conoscenza e spiritualità .
Campanella sottolinea l'importanza della comunità rispetto all'individualismo, sostenendo che la proprietà privata è la radice di molti mali sociali. Nella Città del Sole l'amore per la patria e per il bene comune supera gli interessi personali, dando vita a una società armoniosa e giusta.
