Although the current rift between the governments of Bolivia and Chile is the result of legal actions and high-flown speeches, the deep roots of the Bolivian-Chilean discrepancies are to be found in the opposing master narratives that both nations built and adopted in relation to history. Master narratives that, as this paper intends to demonstrate, have had a determining influence on the formation of the national identities of the two countries and, consequently, on what one believes about the other, on the other side of the Cordillera.But in addition to examining the different narratives and their impact on the formation of national identities; this book includes an analysis of the ruling of the International Court of Justice, issued in October 2018, which determined that Chile did not contract an obligation to negotiate a sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean for Bolivia. This analysis focuses on the speeches of the parties during the process and the repercussions that the ruling has had and is likely to have.
