La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie) is a melodramma or opera semiseria in two acts by Gioachino Rossini. The libretto was written by Giovanni Gherardini after Théodore Baudouin d'Aubigny and Louis-Charles Caigniez's melodrama La pie voleuse.
The opera tells the story of Ninetta, a young servant girl wrongly accused of stealing silverware. Through a series of dramatic events and mistaken identities, Ninetta is sentenced to death. However, just in the nick of time, it is discovered that a magpie was the real thief, and Ninetta is exonerated.
First performed in 1817, La Gazza Ladra showcases Rossini's brilliance in blending comedy and tragedy, and it remains a beloved work in the operatic repertoire.
