Il vecchio barone inglese si apre con Sir Phillip Harclay che ritorna in Inghilterra dopo anni di servizio all'estero e scopre che il suo amico Arthur Lord Lovel è morto e che il castello di famiglia è stato venduto al barone Fitz-Owen. Tra i figli del barone, Harclay nota in particolare il figlio adottivo Edmund, un contadino del villaggio vicino. Il cavaliere sente subito un legame con il ragazzo e si offre di adottarlo come suo figlio. Da qui, la vicenda prosegue con un intreccio di avventura, mistero, romanticismo e soprannaturale, raccontando il destino tragico della famiglia Lovel.
Il vecchio barone inglese è un influente romanzo gotico delle origini. Fu pubblicato per la prima volta anonimo nel 1777 con il titolo The Champion of Virtue, e un anno dopo ripubblicato con il titolo attuale e il nome dell'autrice, Clara Reeve. Scritto come una derivazione del Castello di Otranto di Walpole, il romanzo ne segue un intreccio simile. Mantiene alcuni dei tratti spettrali che definiscono il genere, ma evita gli elementi più fantastici del suo predecessore spirituale, per raggiungere l'obiettivo dichiarato dalla Reeve: unire le circostanze più attraenti e interessanti del romanzo antico e del romanzo moderno.
