Patsy McCarthy idolized her aunt, Kathryn Bettendahl; she believed Kathryn would one day lead a movie studio. Kathryn's daughters, Sally and Amber, adored Patsy. Patsy destroyed competition; no one who knew her competed against her. Kathryn guided her husband Darrell to become a Hollywood top tier producer. Patsy visited Kathryn in 1955 in Montecito while Swedish movie director Nils Westerholm and his son Gunnar visited. At ages 11 and 13 Patsy and Gunnar became inseparable, a result Kathryn expected. When Kathryn died in 1957 planning changed, Darrell following Kathryn's wishes. Patsy no longer visited Montecito. Darrell guided Patsy without Patsy's knowledge, stopped communicating with Patsy, provided financial resources, directed her toward USC film, monitored her progress. Kathryn expected Patsy to be the best studio head ever. Kathryn emphasized Patsy making her own choices. Patsy might decide against Hollywood. Kathryn couldn't knock down barriers for Patsy; planning would require Darrell creating a new studio.
