Born in La Ciotat in 1907, pétanque owes its origin to Jules Hugues, known as Lenoir, a champion of Provençal games who, afflicted by paralyzing rheumatism, could no longer run before throwing. His friend Ernest Pitiot then had the ingenious idea of throwing the ball from a circle drawn on the ground, giving rise to the term Pétanque, derived from the Provençal words pè (foot) and tanca (anchored), meaning feet anchored.
