As the presidential primaries of SDP and NRC heats up, criticisms of the Federal military government by prominent Nigerians like Enahoro, Obasanjo, Gani Fawehinmi, and Ken Saro-Wiwa, increased. By May 1993, just a month to the June 12 Presidential Election, political intrigues, coupled with undercurrent anxieties built up exponentially as Arthur Nzeribe's Association For Better Nigeria and its Four More Years For Babangida campaign continued to gain momentum, while an unwilling Babangida feigned ignorance, refusing blatantly to restrain Nzeribe.

While Ojukwu and 71 other presidential aspirants were disqualified, party conventions of National Republican Convention (NRC) progressed with hefty Ghana Must Go bags, moving from house-to-house clandestinely in the dead of the night.

As for the SDP, having played a fast one on Musa Shehu Ya'radua, MKO Abiola emerged as the presidential candidate while Baba Gana Kingibe and Atiku Abubakar came in second and third respectively. Sultan Dasuki, representing the Northern power brokers, and high-ranking officers of the Babagangida military government, were very uncomfortable with the emergence of Abiola. Pressure began to mount on Babangida to put a stop to the whole process....
