Iphigenia in Tauris is a play written by the German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It tells the story of Iphigenia, the daughter of the Greek king Agamemnon, who was sent to Tauris as a sacrifice to the goddess Artemis. In Tauris, Iphigenia serves as a priestess in the temple of Artemis, where she is tasked with performing human sacrifices. However, when her brother Orestes and his friend Pylades arrive in Tauris, Iphigenia is faced with a difficult decision: to fulfill her duty and sacrifice her own brother, or to help him escape and risk angering the goddess. The play explores themes of family, duty, and morality, and is considered one of Goethe's most important works.1794.
