Lavengro and The Romany Rye is a two-part autobiographical novel written by George Borrow. The book follows the life of the protagonist, Lavengro, who is portrayed as a wandering adventurer with a love for languages and literature. The first part of the book, Lavengro, tells the story of his childhood and early adulthood, including his apprenticeship as a blacksmith, his travels around England, and his encounters with various people, including gypsies, scholars, and criminals. The second part of the book, The Romany Rye, continues Lavengro's story as he becomes more involved with the gypsy community and their way of life. He befriends a charismatic gypsy leader, known as the Romany Rye, and becomes embroiled in a series of adventures and conflicts with rival gypsy groups and other outsiders.Throughout both parts of the book, Borrow weaves together elements of autobiography, fiction, and travelogue, creating a vivid and engaging portrait of life in 19th-century England. The novel is notable for its vivid descriptions of the English countryside, its exploration of the Romany culture, and its celebration of the power of language and storytelling. Lavengro and The Romany Rye remains a classic of English literature and a beloved work of adventure and self-discovery.1851. Designed to be read as a modern novel. English writer and traveler, Borrow led a nomadic life in England and on the Continent, where he was a translator and agent for the British and Foreign Bible Society. The autobiographical Lavengro is considered his masterwork and its sequel, Romany Rye, is also considered among his best work. Like all of his other writings, these two volumes are based on his wanderings. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
