This volume contains two of Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais's most celebrated plays, Le Barbier de Séville and Le Mariage de Figaro. Le Barbier de Séville, ou la Précaution Inutile, a sparkling comedy of wit and intrigue, introduces the resourceful barber Figaro and the lovelorn Count Almaviva. Together, they conspire to win the beautiful Rosine away from her jealous guardian, Doctor Bartolo.
La Folle Journée, ou Le Mariage de Figaro continues the adventures of Figaro, now valet to the Count, as he prepares to marry Suzanne. However, the Count, bored with his marriage to Rosine, attempts to seduce Suzanne, leading to a day of hilarious confusion and social commentary. Beaumarchais's sharp wit and keen observations on social class made Le Mariage de Figaro a cultural phenomenon, foreshadowing the French Revolution. These plays remain enduring classics, celebrated for their vibrant characters, witty dialogue, and insightful critique of society.
