The Rugendo Rhino boys leave their school in the highlands of Kenya and cross the ocean to Pemba Island, off the coast of Tanzania. While swimming and searching for shells, they find much of the coral reef has been destroyed by dynamite fishing. They hear a legend that Captain Kidd, a pirate from centuries earlier, hid a treasure on a nearby island. They start searching for the pirate's treasure, and help rescue the reef from destruction.
The plot races on, pitting them against modern day pirates on the Kenyan coast as they work with Jill and the Cheetah Club to save the crew of a ship that has been seized.
