When Gulisa's husband, Imeda, fails to return home from work one evening, she must throw herself and her two young sons on the mercy of the Golden Dragon. They strike a deal: the Dragon promises to care for the sons, if, when they are grown, they pay him back for his kindness with fifty golden coins each, earned through honest work. Only once this is fulfilled will the Dragon release their mother from his servitude. Bedisa, the elder son, becomes a doctor, and saves to buy the coins while helping everyone he can. Eter, the younger son, becomes a musician, and lives his life for pleasure, but learns his lesson when one of his coins is stolen...
