Lessing's Nathan The Wise is a play written by German author Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in 1779. The play is set in Jerusalem during the time of the Crusades and explores themes of religious tolerance and human understanding. The story revolves around Nathan, a Jewish merchant, and his interactions with a Christian Knight and a Muslim Sultan. Through their conversations, Nathan challenges the notion of religious superiority and advocates for the idea that all religions have value and should be respected. The play is considered a masterpiece of the Enlightenment era and a significant work in the development of German literature. This edition of the play was published in 1901 and includes an introduction and notes by the editor. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
