In The Life of Flavius Josephus, the first-century historian recounts his own experiences during one of the most turbulent periods in Jewish and Roman history.
Written as a personal defense of his conduct during the Jewish-Roman War, Josephus provides a detailed account of his early life, his education, and his rise to leadership in Galilee during the revolt against Rome. The work offers a rare autobiographical perspective from a figure who stood at the center of the conflict that ultimately led to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE.
Josephus describes the political tensions within Judea, the rival factions among the Jewish leadership, and the complex military and diplomatic challenges he faced as commander in Galilee.
