Clint Wolf's birthday is fast approaching, and he and his German shepherd, Achilles, decide to run some catfish lines one night in preparation for the upcoming celebratory fish fry.

While placing their first set of lines, they stumble upon a camp that had been burglarized. Being the chief of detectives for the Mechant Loup Police Department means that Clint is always on duty, so he does the dutiful thing and begins searching other camps in the area. Sure enough, they discover more break-ins, and the hunt for the burglar begins.

Although they search for hours and travel deep into the remote swamps, they're unable to locate the thief. Clint is just entering a place called Pelican Basin when Achilles is suddenly on high alert, and all of his attention is focused on one camp. Clint heads in that direction, ever wary that they might be stumbling into a trap.

When they draw near to the camp, Achilles suddenly leaps from the boat. The magnificent dog bounds through the shallow water and then jumps up onto a weathered wharf, heading straight for an old boatshed. Clint docks the boat and gives chase. When he reaches the boatshed, he finds that his dog has made a grisly discovery that threatens to upend his birthday celebration-and maybe even his own life.
